K1200RS Solo Seat Cowling : Customer Comments

Prototype Tester: Just got her installed...1. Appearance to these old eyes looked remarkable.
2. Fit is stable. Well done.
3. When removing, the magnets offered enough resistance that I felt the cowling was there to stay.
4. Chimp instructions for sure

Prototype Tester: FedEx tried to deliver to my house Thursday afternoon and I wasn't there, so I went to the FedEx warehouse that evening. I was on my bike, so I opened the box out in the parking lot and read your directions in the dark by street light. Even so, it was pretty straight forward and had little trouble putting the cowling on so I could ride home.
Appearance: Great! Perfect shape, adds significantly to the bike's looks.
Fit: Perfect on my bike. It fits snugly over the harness hooks and the contour to my seat could not be better.
Furnished Rubber Trim: It's a little loose and flimsy. I guess it's OK, but I would like something a little more substantial even if it's wider or thicker.
Magnet Strength: I expected a "click" when the magnet hit the plate, but I never got that, so at first I was a little uncertain that the cowling was on firmly enough. But I have commuted back and forth to work 60 miles for two days at 80-100mph with no movement at all. I'd say the magnets are strong enough. Jerry, good job on this. It's a fine accessory to my bike.

Prototype Tester: The cowling is here! I took it out and think it looks perfect. I compared the color and it looks like a superb match. Your painter puts on a real smooth finish. As I had indicated before, I really like the whole concept of this K1200 RS cowling. Here are my first impressions:
Appearance: Superb and very complimentary to the K12. The decal recommendation is very worthwhile.
Fit: Very good. I think it is just right, and is conducive to installation from rear to front. That is, it is a close, snug, fit, and looks like it fits very well.
Magnet Strength: Just fine. Any stronger, and it might cause too sudden a movement during removal from the bike
I managed to get out last Sunday on the bike with the Solo Seat Cowling in place. The weather provided an added test to the overall evaluation, as the winds were kicking up to about 40 MPH, at times, so there were some mean crosswinds. It was so windy during my stop that I was gravely concerned that the bike was going to tip right over. I had one hand gripping the left handlebar, and the other administering the fuel nozzle. I cannot think of a better possible environment for testing your cowling. Despite challenging meteorological conditions, the cowling maintained perfect alignment on the seat, and as far as I could tell, did not move in the least. Therefore, I am sure that the strength of the magnets is just right. Through rough winds, bumpy North Carolina backroads, extreme side buffeting, and rain, the cowling emerged victorious and unscathed, determined to succeed in it mission, no matter what the odds. Yes, sir, we have one dedicated trooper here...Special Forces tested...and PASSED! Incidentally, as an added test, I did not say anything to my fellow riders about the cowling that day. I wanted to see if they would notice that I had added an "aftermarket" product to the bike. As usual, my beautiful blue K12 got inspected, but nobody around here has one, so, for lack of comparison subjects, they did not realize that the seat had an added component that day. Even my friend on his K1200LT, who is knowledgable on all BMW motorcycles, did not notice anything out of place or unusual on the bike. And he KNOWS this bike, is extremely gadget-oriented, and wants one just like it. The guys at the dealer saw it and were all over it. They wanted to know from where it came, so I told them, etc. They liked the paint reall well, also, but I did not elaborate on the availability of painted units. The point is, the cowling fits so well, and is of such good quality, that it blends with the bike and leaves others (and myself) with the impression that this is simply a damn fine-looking machine. I think that says a heck of a lot about this product. It looks great and is completely unobtrusive at the same time. I really like this product and do not expect my opinion to change. Very good, buddy; you have a winner here. The cowling is, I think, a product very worthy of the Pirate's Lair name.
Note: I decided to apply 2 of those little clear bumpstops (nylon or vinyl material) to my luggage rack to keep the cowling from making direct contact with it should I accidently knock it back. I just pressed them into the inside of the rack, so now the cowl will not rub its paint off against the powdercoated rack. You cannot even see them in there. With me moving around on the seat, it will eventually back up into the rack, but will not ever come off.

Prototype Tester: Appearance: Fit and finish is very nice, the paint of the prototypes is very good; a perfect match.
Fit: Fit and finish is top notch. Everything works together (bra, magnets, straps, cowl ) very well and gives a very precise fit.
Magnet Strength: The bottom line is the cowl seems to be secure and in no danger of going air borne. I'd leave them as they are...
Instructions: The instructions were good. I followed them " to the letter" when I initially installed the cowl and the result was good... In repeating the process several times, however, I think I'd write them from the " behind the bike" perspective, as opposed to the "from the right side" perspective.

Pirate... got the Solo Seat Cowl on Saturday ITS BEAUTIFUL FITS LIKE A GLOVE, the only thing the quality is so good it makes the rest of the bike look like junk . Your seat cowl is Bimota Quality. Again many thanks.

Just wanted to let you know that I received my painted cowling on Mon.(1 week shipping from CA).David is a "master" it is flawless and the paint matches exactly. I already read your instructions on your site so when I got it, I installed it right away. Everything fits perfectly as you mention. The protective strip was a bit hard to put on so I let my son/riding partner do it. It is a bit long (slightly less than 1/4") so I cut it. What a beauty enhancement it makes. I can still attach the T-Bag on the rear rack with or w/out the backrest as well. I will have to use a tank bag however if I don't have the rack mounted for that sporty look. I'll send you pics when I take it out this weekend and show it to my dealer, Cross Country BMW. Thanks for a great product and keep up with your quest for unique K12 parts. Bet that BMW wishes they offered this one from the get go...
